Conservation > Treatments> Nicolaes de Bruyn, A Knight on Horseback with Time and the Devil

Following documentation, solubility testing was carried out on this print to determine suitable treatments to improve its appearance. The surface was cleaned and then adhesive residues and old repairs were removed from the back of this print. The print was given a washing treatment to reduce stains and was dried and flattened. Repairs to tears and losses were carried out and the print was rehoused in a new archival mount.By restoring the colour of the paper to something closer to its original white, the contrast with the black ink is improved. Highlights, like the flank of the knight’s horse and the ground beneath the horses’ feet, are more clearly visible. The chiaroscuro effects in the foliage of the trees can also be seen better.
